The Cocoa Plan
Our Vision
The Cocoa Plan represents our ongoing commitment to the welfare of the cocoa industry and its workers
Our vision is to help cocoa farmers run profitable farms, respect the environment, have a good quality of life and for their children to benefit from an education and see cocoa farming as a respectable profession.
Crucial to realising this vision is a supply of responsibly farmed cocoa and our tree programme, farmer education and social projects. Field schools, farmer education and improved trees will help farms become profitable and buying from co-ops helps them to help farmers by providing other services and products at group prices.
Social projects such as building schools and providing water wells improve the basic quality of life for these communities.
The Cocoa Plan is Nestlé’s way of helping to tackle key issues facing cocoa farmers, their families and communities in order to create a better future for cocoa farming. It covers all aspects of a cocoa bean’s journey, starting with farmers and ending with you, the consumer.
In order to make a significant impact on improving the quality of cocoa, and at the same time income farmers receive, we started research on propagating better quality, higher yielding cocoa plantlets over ten years ago.
To scale up our work with cocoa farming cooperatives, we have recently opened a Research and Development Centre in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, as a base in West Africa. This facility is working in close collaboration with the local cocoa growing communities to ensure they benefit from our efforts.
To continue this journey, we are launching The Cocoa Plan, to pull together a broad range of important initiatives and expand them more widely. Some are exclusive to Nestlé and others we support and actively participate along with organisations that share our concerns and are clearly and measurably aligned with The Cocoa Plan commitments.
