Our Action Plan

Working with International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies

partnership with Nestlé

Since 2002, Nestlé has worked in partnership with the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) and Red Crescent Societies (RCS). Our partnership focuses on supporting their Global Water and Sanitation Initiative (GWSI).

After the first field project providing water and sanitation for 20,000 people in Mozambique, the Nestlé GWSI partnership is now focusing on Côte d'Ivoire, working with both the IFRC and the Ivorian Red Cross.

After three years’ work, our first project has just been completed and covers the Abidjan region and south-east of Côte d'Ivoire, benefiting some 50,000 people. It involved training in local Red Cross branches, restoring 50 mechanical water pumps and boreholes (50 to100 metres deep), and constructing and operating eight public latrine blocks in areas of high sanitation risk, such as market places.

Our second project is about to get under way. It’s in the Gagnoa cocoa growing region. Its objective is to provide access to safe water and sanitation for around 15,000 schoolchildren in 25 schools. As with the first project, it involves deep well water pumps and school latrines, as well as training schoolchildren, the creation of health clubs in schools to promote good health and hygiene practices, and the provision of waste disposal teams.
