The women’s coop President helps unload young cocoa plantlets from Nestlé nursery trees

A coop run by women for women was the first of the Nestlé partners to begin planting its trees in the field. The ever active President, Agathe (pictured on the right), was on hand to help with the tree distribution. All 135,000 trees from the first year of Nestlé’s nurseries will be planted in the next 4 weeks. Key to the successful survival of young cocoa plants is shade from full sunlight. Typically this is done through growing banana plants in between the cocoa trees. This provides shade for the first year and a source of food and income for the family while the cocoa trees mature.
