Financial Times journalist, Javier Blas, interviews an Ivorian farmer who will benefit from Cocoa Plan initiatives
The Cocoa Plan was recently featured in a Financial Times article regarding the many challenges faced by the cocoa industry especially Côte d'Ivoire, West Africa, and the efforts being made to solve the issues.
Hans Jöhr, Head of Agriculture at Nestlé, explains the scale of the problems, including ageing [cocoa] trees, poor governance and easier profits made from alternative crops.
To address this issue, as part of The Cocoa Plan, Nestlé is starting to replant Côte d'Ivoire’s failing plots with new, higher yielding stock that can resist pests. The aim is to replant 12 million trees over the next decade.
